Yaegaki, Later (nochi ni) Ise, Left Sheet (Hidari) of a Triptych of Beauties (Bijin sô sanpukutsui)
美人相 三幅対 「左 八重垣後ニいせ」
Artist Okumura Masanobu (Japanese, 1686–1764)
Another print in the set: Ukiyo-e taisei 3 (1931), #104
Hosoban; 32 x 14.9 cm (12 5/8 x 5 7/8 in.)
Medium or Technique
Woodblock print (benizuri-e); ink and limited color on paper
Not On View
Two sheets of the triptych: 06.391, 06.392
The series title, written on the cover of the book in the upper corner that serves as a title cartouche, is visible on the impression illustrated in Ukiyo-e taisei but has faded to the point of illegibility on both of the MFA prints.
In early hosoban triptychs, “left” and “right” often (but not always) mean “proper left” and “proper right,” that is, right and left respectively as seen by the viewer.
