The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston seeks a full-time Assistant Paper Conservator to fill a one-year term position beginning September 2014. The assistant conservator will be responsible for preparing woodblock prints by Kuniyoshi and Kunisada for a major exhibition opening in March 2016.
Under the direction of the Asian flat works on paper section supervisor, the Assistant Paper Conservator will undertake examinations and treatments for loans and in-house exhibitions, and document physical properties, conservation processes and materials and techniques used to create particular works of art. The flat works on paper section of the Asian Conservation Studio is responsible for the care of one of the foremost collections of Japanese woodblock prints and illustrated books. South Asian paintings, manuscripts on paper and palm-leaf, Islamic manuscripts on paper and parchment, and ephemera such as Japanese postcards and Chinese lithographs from the 20th century also fall under the studio’s responsibilities. Essential functions include: determine need for conservation, and design and execute appropriate treatments, referring unusual cases to supervisor as appropriate; document conservation work in writing and through photography; manage personal workflow to meet established deadlines; coordinate exhibition catalogue photography.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree (M.A. or M.S.) in conservation with a specialization in works of art on paper from a recognized conservation training program. Experience working with Japanese woodblock prints is desired. Knowledge of and interest in printmaking and artist’s materials, and familiarity with South and East Asian papers is important. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines without compromising high standards is essential. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise reports, are required.
