The Department of Contemporary Art is responsible for the acquisition, study and display of art created from 1955 to today. Contemporary art at the MFA encompasses many media including film and video art, sculpture, installation, photography, paintings, design, craft, decorative arts, and performance art. In September 2011, the Museum opened its renovated Linde Family Wing as a space dedicated to contemporary art, vastly expanding the department’s capacity for exhibition. In Spring of 2013 the Department launched its performance art program, seeking to activate the museum in new ways. 

The Department of Contemporary Art seeks a volunteer to provide assistance with the production of a Spring 2017 performance and social practice exhibition. This position reports to the Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art & MFA Programs. Basic responsibilities of this position include the following:


  • Assist with the community outreach and organizing components of the project
  • Manage acquisition of materials for performances
  • General administrative and production support in advance of the exhibition
  • Provide support on the day of the events and during evening hours



  • Interest in Performance Art, Museum Education, and/or Community Organizing
  • Organized, self-starter
  • Proven project management experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer
  • General knowledge of Contemporary Art
  • Must be available during business hours, and some evenings, the day of performances
  • Spanish language skills preferred 
  • *Ability to begin in mid-January and continue through June (Position may be renewed in fall.)






12.00 - 21.00 hours per week

Flexible schedule 4-7 hours per day, (within M-F, 9a-5p parameters), depending on performance needs. Tues, Weds, Thurs perferred
