The Director, Stewardship and Events is a senior management position within the External Relations division reporting to the Deputy Director. Under the direction of the Deputy Director, the Director is responsible for the advancement of the Museum’s Stewardship and Events Program, ensuring that the MFA is optimally positioned to expand its donor base, maintain the highest standards of relationship management, and to use private events effectively across the Museum to steward and cultivate donors and meet revenue goals. The Director will ensure that effective institutional policies are in place to support and coordinate donor stewardship in the Development Department and across the Museum, including naming rights policies, gift levels policies, benefits and recognition frameworks; and he/she will manage and oversee all reporting to donors on designated funds. The Director will ensure that all communication from the Development Department and Director’s Office to donors is of the highest standard. The Director will also develop and implement a comprehensive events strategy and will oversee the Museum’s special events and stewardship staff, as well as the MFA travel program coordinator. He/she will ensure that the Museum’s senior staff including the Deputy Director, Director of the Museum and Trustees are well prepared for and supported in their stewardship roles including the drafting of key briefings, messages and talking points.
Minimum of 10 years successful development experience in a management position with extensive knowledge of event and stewardship planning and oversight. Experience in the areas of donor relations, cultivation and stewardship, as well as in the development and implementation of policies and procedural guidelines required. Strong management and leadership skills are key, as is the ability to lead the program at the level expected without close supervision. Exceptional organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks effectively required. Strong writer with an ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of constituencies and with exceptional attention to detail. Poise, maturity, flexibility, initiative and ability to work as a team player essential. Proven success in a complex and fast-paced environment.
