The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA) is conducting a search for a regular, full-time faculty position in Sound and Moving Image to begin September 2013. We seek educators who have a strong grounding in theoretical, historical and practical aspects of art making. Our faculty work across disciplinary boundaries; these appointments will be made as interdisciplinary positions rather than specific programs. SMFA has a strong tradition in assisting students to work across media and disciplines. Candidates should have the ability to facilitate students' research and production across both art and academic fields of study. Faculty members participate in curriculum design, course development, and interdisciplinary projects. Preferred candidates should have the ability to teach introductory through advanced level courses and to develop both cross-media courses and seminars.
We are seeking an artist-scholar who will contribute to the time based discourse at the school through studio teaching, topic based seminars and critiques. Successful candidates will have a mastery of diverse digital technologies, knowledge of art history, critical theory and media studies, an experimental orientation to art production and advanced pedagogical abilities. Successful candidates will demonstrate an active professional practice in media production as it relates to fine arts. Preference will be given to candidates with conceptual and critical practices, demonstrated research abilities and an interest in emergent forms.
Requirements:
Candidates should have an MFA or PhD (as appropriate), or equivalent. They should have a minimum of three years full time teaching experience and a strong professional exhibition record on a national or international level. A full-time teaching work load includes teaching five periods a semester. In addition to teaching, candidates will be expected to participate in student advising, faculty governance, committee service and the life of the school. International candidates will be considered.
