Reporting to the Director of Creative and Web Services, the Manager works with staff throughout the Museum on the conceptualization, specification, delivery, and measurement of all visitor-facing digital initiatives including web site features, mobile content delivery, in-gallery touch screens, and emerging technologies. This position manages a team of producers and developers and oversees the day-to-day upkeep of interactive systems, from scheduling and prioritizing web enhancements to ensuring the stability of the iPod Touch-based MFA Guide platform.
Researches, delivers, and sustains digital solutions for exhibitions, publications, promotions, visitor services, and other purposes, helping the Museum to reach new audiences and enrich the museum experience onsite and online. Works across all MFA departments and business units to produce interactive resources in support of the MFA’s strategic vision. Collaborates closely with IT, Education, Exhibitions and Design, Publications, Marketing, Creative Services, Access, Membership, and many other departments to deliver digital outcomes that support the larger mission of the Museum. Manages multiple vendor relationships, ensuring timely delivery within resource constraints.
Acts as digital strategist and project manager for all new projects, overseeing hybrid teams that include MFA resources and external vendors and partners. The Manager will exercise independent judgment and creative direction to formulate ideas, write detailed project specifications, lead vendor selection processes, manage project plans, gather relevant content, and critically evaluate the success of projects against goals according to objective criteria (user surveys, usability studies, usage metrics, etc.).
Ensures the accuracy, timeliness and findability of artwork collection information on mfa.org and continuing to evolve search functionality to respond to trends and usage statistics. Set creative/interactive direction for web, video and multimedia work, including MFA Guide tours, exhibition media, in-gallery digital experiences, and other formats. Consult with conservation and curatorial teams on issues in digital artwork display and storage. Advise on social media trends and help generate ideas for successful campaigns that leverage social media best practices. Prepare reports and provide usage statistics from Google Analytics for the Museum’s web sites. Act as a central and significant contributor to the Museum’s overall digital strategy. Work closely with the MFA’s Development department to develop proposals for potential public and private funding of Web and New Media projects. Present on New Media initiatives as needed to Trustees, donors, the Management Team, and other Museum staff. Manage Web and New Media staff, including hiring, training, and ongoing professional development. Manage departmental budget as well as grant-related budgeting and reporting.
Requires a bachelor's degree and at least 5-7 years of closely related experience, preferably in an arts organization, library, non-profit, or museum setting. Must have a strong vision for how technology and media can transform the visitor experience. Deep familiarity with digital technologies used in production, project management, and programming. Experience with video and audio production and delivery (tools, formats, streaming, etc.). Proven understanding of software development lifecycle, production best practices, quality assurance methodology, code management, and project management techniques. Mature organizational skills and ability to collaborate successfully within large cross-functional project teams. Proven ability working within consensus-driven organizations to manage project outcomes and rally stakeholders around a common vision. Demonstrated track record effectively managing and mentoring technical and production staff. Expert communication and conflict resolution skills, including ability to communicate difficult technical concepts in layman’s terms. Deep commitment to educational outcomes and understanding of how to realize them with technology. Willingness to roll up one’s sleeves and jump in as needed, whether to help load content, perform testing, edit HTML, train end users, or check equipment.
