SMFA International Student Advising Internship

Founded in 1876, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, (SMFA), is one of the oldest and largest museum schools in the country, and has been educating artists by providing them with the respect and freedom they need to develop. 

The SMFA has an internship position open in the field of international and exchange student advising, and international programs. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work with incoming international and exchange students, as well as SMFA students studying abroad.  The Office of Student Affairs welcomes applications for a six-month, fulltime internship. This internship is unpaid, but offers opportunity for independent projects and learning in the area of International Education. The starting date for this position is flexible. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in creating a framework for academic travel courses
  • Help to plan orientation and 1st week follow up meetings for international students
  • Event planning coordination for international students
  • Assist with Pre-departure and arrival meetings with exchange participants
  • Assisting in revising and creation of website content
  • Reviewing existing systems for more effective student services
  • Learn and implement effective international student advising tactics

Qualifications:

  • Graduate (or junior/senior undergraduate) student enrolled in a degree program in intercultural relations or field of international student advising 
  • Excellent communication skills; writing, speaking, listening
  • Personable with a professional attitude
  • Ability to work on several projects at a time and work with a variety of students and staff
  • Experience with program planning and implementation desired, training provided when necessary
  • Ability to work independently, taking initiative to start new projects or tasks with minimal oversight
  • Willingness to work with high expectations, flexibility, and as a member of a team
  • High energy level and motivation to learn and assist others
  • Demonstrated interest in inbound and outbound exchange
  • Demonstrated interest and expertise in working directly with students
  • Experience living or working in another country a plus
  • Foreign language experience a plus (Mandarin, Korean, Spanish) 
  • Ability to commit to 25-30 hours per week for 6-8 months 
  • Ability to attend orientation on either Wed, Sept 17 (6 pm) or Wed, Oct 1 (10 am or 6 pm)
