Under direction of the Area Rep in Sculpture and reporting to the Manager, SMFA Instructional Technology, this position involves working directly with students, faculty and staff who use the Welding Shop, with an emphasis on welding and steel fabrication. In this role the Welding Shop Technician will provide daily supervision to ensure the safety of all who work in the Welding Shop. Additional responsibilities include: Provide instruction on a continual basis to ensure that safe procedures are followed by all who work in the Welding Shop; Give technical assistance in fabrication and welding as needed; Be constantly alert for dangerous situations and intervene to prevent injury; Maintain Welding Shop equipment and supplies; Repair and maintain all welding and fabrication equipment, keeping it in safe operating condition; Repair or replace defective power and hand tools; Develop and maintain a system to inventory all expendable supplies and safety equipment to ensure they are replenished in a timely manner within budget constraints; Arrange for steel delivery as needed and recruit student monitors to assist with offloading; Construct bases for vises, benders, and other machinery supports; Monitor regularly the exterior storage facilities for oxygen and acetylene to ensure backup supplies and safe handling procedures; Place orders for supplies for both the Welding Shop and the Metals Area; Maintain order and cleanliness in shop; See that all major obstructions are removed from around machinery and workbenches, and that work in process is properly stored in the storage area; See that floors are swept and vacuumed, and workbenches and tables are kept clear of debris; Keep the storage area organized and material arranged for safe and easy selection; Post on the Welding Shop door a schedule of regular hours as well as hours of holidays and during Spring Break; Select, train, and supervise qualified student monitors to staff the Welding Shop during evenings and weekends; Prepare and maintain schedule of shop monitors and maintain access list at the security desk; Oversee the monitors technical competence and fulfillment of responsibilities; Provide, as required by course syllabi, demonstrations and instructions on technical aspects of: welding processes, to include MIG, TIG and gas welding, gas and plasma arc cutting, brazing, forging and hot and cold forming; Monitor, in coordination with the Area Rep and appropriate Sculpture area faculty the budget for welding supplies, materials, equipment, and student monitors; Ensure that adequate funds are available to maintain or replace shop and hand tools as well as supplies; Assist the Area Rep and faculty determining capital budget purchases; Work closely with other studio managers and technicians and the Media Stockroom, to support the needs of faculty and students – this may include helping students when faculty members are not present.

Associate’s degree with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; Strong welding and fabrication skills; Must be able to lift equipment up to 75lbs.
