During the past decade, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), and the Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts (N/BMFA) have worked together to present a diverse exhibition schedule representative of the MFA’s encyclopedic collection and featuring some of its great masterpieces.

In 1999, the N/BMFA’s inaugural year, three exhibitions were presented, sharing with audiences in Japan the richness of the MFA’s collection: Monet, Renoir and the Impressionist Landscape, an exploration of Impressionism as seen in more than 65 works by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and Degas; Art of the Ancient Mediterranean World, an exhibition that traced the development of ancient Mediterranean civilizations (Egypt, Greece, and Rome) and their cultural interconnections during a 5,000-year period; and Okakura Tenshin and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, a look at the MFA’sworld-renowned Asian collection and the legacy of its curator, Okakura Kakuzo (also known as Okakura Tenshin), as seen through 100 Japanese and Chinese masterpieces spanning 5,000 years.

Over the years, MFA-organized exhibitions have been enthusiastically received by visitors to the museum, including: Millet (2002), an exhibition of the unforgettable images of rural life created by Jean-Francois Millet; Impressionism in Boston (2003), a display of 50 works that explored the relationship between French and American art in Boston from 1850 to 1910; Masterworks from the MFA (2005), a collection of masterpieces showcasing the human figure; and The World of Claude Monet (2008), an exhibition featuring24 of the artist’s paintings.  In addition, two exhibitions on view at the N/BMFA focused specifically on the MFA’s vast ukiyo-e collection: The Allure of Edo (2006), which highlighted the “Floating World” of Edo-period Japan, and Printed Treasures (Ukiyo-e) (2008).
