Cecily Brown’s passion for the medium of painting has resulted in grand and ambitious canvases revealing her respect for and inspiration from the history of art. From Goya, Poussin, and the British landscape painters to the abstraction of de Kooning and Mitchell, Brown excavates the past while reinvigorating 21st century painting with a feminine viewpoint. Brown rigorously addresses the figure and human flesh, creating unashamedly luscious paintings that range between figuration and abstraction. This exhibition includes eighteen canvases, some quite large, surveying Brown’s mature work from 1997 to the present. Born in London in 1969, she studied at the Slade School of Art (1989-1993) and moved to New York in 1997.
"Cecily Brown" was organized by the Des Moines Art Center. Funding for the exhibition is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, and David Kruidenier.
