Luca della Robbia, 'Virgin and child with lilies' (detail), 1460-70. Glazed terracotta. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The relief Virgin and child with lilies (1460-70) demonstrates the experimental approach to color that characterizes the work of Luca della Robbia and his shop.

A new gallery dedicated to Italian Renaissance art contains sculpture, maiolica (tin-glazed earthenware), several paintings, and furniture. Some highlights include sculptures shown in the recent exhibition "Donatello to Giambologna," such as Della Robbia's Virgin and child with lilies (shown above), Donatello's Madonna of the Clouds, and Giambologna's Architecture.

You'll also note that some of the works in this gallery are displayed in new cases manufactured by Goppion, the state-of-the-art case designer for the new American Wing.
