Friends of African and Oceanic Art

This group, the only one of its kind in Boston, fosters appreciation of African and Pacific works through a varied program of lectures and provides a unique opportunity to meet people with similar interests.

Programs by Museum staff, Friends group participants, eminent collectors, distinguished scholars, and curators familiarize Friends of African and Oceanic Art with works at the MFA, other museums, and in private collections. Lectures may focus on connoisseurship and the history of collecting as well as on the contexts in which objects were created and used. A reception before each event gives participants a chance to exchange news, learn from each other, and discuss their passion. The intimate nature of the group allows participants to get to know and talk with the lecturers, among them well-known experts from around the world.

Friends of Asian Art explores the fine and decorative arts, both ancient and modern, from the many different countries comprising present-day Asia.

Sponsored by the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, Friends of Photography offers participants educational and professional resources through a varied program of gallery talks and discussions, study room presentations, and artist visits.

Our group includes collectors, scholars, artists, and others who appreciate photographs; desire to learn more; want to meet others with similar enthusiasm; and wish to support photography acquisitions and activities. The MFA was one of the earliest museums in the country to collect photography, and the collection spans the history of the medium.

Sponsored by the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, Print and Drawing Club offers participants educational and professional resources through a varied program of gallery talks, study room presentations, and local artist visits.

The group includes collectors, scholars, artists, and others who appreciate works on paper; desire to learn more about art; want to meet others with similar enthusiasms; and wish to support department activities and the acquisition of prints and drawings. Since its founding in 1971, Print and Drawing Club’s income has supported the acquisition of nearly 120 works on paper by emerging and established artists.

Textile and Costume Society provides opportunities for learning and sharing through lectures and gallery tours conducted by leading textile artists, historians, conservators, collectors, and curators who speak on a variety of topics—from tapestries and carpets to samplers, shoes, quilts, jewelry, and fashion.

The group provides an opportunity for participants to connect with the curatorial staff as well as like-minded textile, fashion, and jewelry enthusiasts through stimulating, thoughtful, and entertaining programs.

Enjoy learning about the collection from the Museum’s curatorial staff and visiting experts while also supporting new acquisitions for the David and Roberta Logie Department of Textile and Fashion Arts.
