The Visual Archives is a division of the Department of Intellectual Property that houses and maintains the MFA’s photographic archive collection, including documentary photography in both analog and digital formats of objects, events, galleries, and people relating to the MFA.
The Visual Archives’ goal is to convey the MFA collection to the public through visual documentation and the authorized use of text and images for the purposes of reproduction and distribution while protecting the integrity of the MFA’s intellectual property. The Visual Archives works closely with the Photography Studio to ensure the quality and integrity of all photographic materials.
Responsibilities:
• Prepare original negatives for archival storage
• Catalog negatives for inclusion in the museum’s database
• Conduct necessary research to effectively describe the content of materials
• Assist with projects as needed
Qualifications:
• Upper-level undergraduate, graduate, or recently graduated student interested in archival studies, library science and information management, history or art history is preferred
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to prioritize and multi-task
• Ability to work independently
• Strong computer skills: Proficiency using the Internet and Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with databases a plus
• Must have previous cataloging and/or archiving experience
• Commit to a consistent schedule of 12-15 hours per week through mid August
• Ability to attend orientation on either Tues, May 28 (9am-12p) or Tues June 11 (9am-12p)
