  • Faggot Gatherers Returning from the Forest (recto); Woman Holding Laundry. Study for Washerwomen (verso)

    about 1854
    Jean-François Millet (French, 1814–1875)

    Description

After collecting fallen branches for sale in the village, a routine but exhausting labor in the peasant community of Barbizon, a group of three women emerge from the Fontainebleau forest at dusk. The trees and the trudging women, who carry heavy bundles of sticks (faggots), echo each other in a series of shadowy columnar forms, endowing the scene with the solemnity of a ritual procession. The woman in the foreground drags a long walking stick.

We do not know the name of this young man, but his wary expression, jaunty costume, and cap tipped to the side suggest that he is an urban youth, who probably sat for Millet in Paris.

  • Man Leaning over a Bale of Grain II (studies for Harvesters Resting)

    Jean-François Millet (French, 1814–1875)

    Description

Studies for Harvesters Resting, oil, 1853, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

This preparatory drawing for Millet’s major painting “Harvesters Resting (Ruth and Boaz),” also in the exhibition, helps us understand his careful process of study and planning on paper, in the tradition of many great European artists. After laying out his initial ideas, Millet did careful studies of individuals and light and shadow, of which this a particularly fine example.

    Description

This delightful work was almost certainly prepared to appeal to a growing market of drawings collectors and connoisseurs. Millet’s virtuosic handling of a rust-colored crayon to fluidly describe the agile movements of a spinner and animate her surroundings reveals his knowledge, and mastery, of Old Master techniques.
