    Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864–1946)

    Description

    Estate #: OK 3 B

Sometimes the most revealing and evocative photographic portraits are not images of faces at all. Alfred Stieglitz’s photograph of the painter Georgia O’Keeffe, whom he met in 1916 and married in 1924, is part of a groundbreaking series of several hundred portraits he made of her over twenty-some years. This cropped view of her hands posed elegantly with a silver thimble is characteristic of these often fragmentary portrayals, which together Stieglitz felt captured her essence in a way that no single image ever could. Indeed, many years after her husband’s death, O’Keeffe claimed: “When I look over the photographs Stieglitz took of me … I wonder who that person is. It is as if in my one life I have lived many lives.”

  • Music: A Sequence of Ten Cloud Photographs (No. 1)

    1922
    Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864–1946)

    Description

    Estate #: 27 B

In this photograph, Alfred Stieglitz kept detail to a minimum, isolating a lone white house in a composition of overall darkness that is dramatically torn into two zones as the impending storm chases away the remnants of clear sky. The title of the work suggests that the image could be understood as a visual symphony, an equivalent of musical sound. Made at a time of personal turmoil in Stieglitz’s life, the photograph had emotional resonance, as well. It is an important precursor to his celebrated images of clouds, titled the Equivalents, in which he developed his concept of photographs as metaphors for inner feelings. Stieglitz ultimately believed that through clouds he could express his philosophy of life.

  • House and Grape Leaves

    1934
    Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864–1946)

Place Depicted: Summer place at Lake George, on the eastern edge, New York, United States

    Description

    Estate #: 14 B

Alfred Stieglitz made his earliest photographs of Lake George in the late 1910s. Stieglitz focused his camera on elements of his family’s summer home, a white-shingled farmhouse on the shores of the lake, several hours north of New York City. In this image from the 1930s, he was clearly drawn to the Victorian details of the house’s porch and windows, simplifying their forms into abstract cutouts that echo the heart-shaped foliage of the grapevine on the railing. For Stieglitz, Lake George was both a retreat from the noise and bustle of the city and the site of some of his most influential nature studies of poplar trees, lilac bushes, grasses, and clouds.
