  • Reverend William T. Smithett

    1853
    Southworth and Hawes (American, 1843–62)

    Description

The Boston photographic team of Albert Sands Southworth and Josiah Johnson Hawes mastered a style of daguerreotype portraiture that defined the spirit and idealism of a generation of accomplished Americans. They exploited the qualities of their chosen technique, using the mirrorlike sharpness and detail of the daguerreotype to portray the clear vision and idealistic fervor of the Reverend Smithett. Here, every detail counts, from Smithett’s wild hair to the tense grip of his right hand. His intent gaze looks beyond the picture, and the crisp white and black of his surplice and stole highlight a powerful, upright body that emanates confidence and certainty in that distant vision.

  • McKay's Shipyard, East Boston

    about 1855
    Southworth and Hawes (American, 1843–62)

    Description

The daguerreotype firm of Southworth and Hawes was noted for creating incisive character portraits of America’s most prominent citizens. In an exceptional series of views taken at the shipyard of Daniel McKay, Southworth and Hawes presented a portrait of American enterprise. McKay’s technologically advanced operation in East Boston used steam-powered sawmills and derricks to streamline construction of his legendary clipper ships. This daguerreotype, originally vignetted by an oval mat, brings us into the heart of the business. Stacks of timber fill the foreground, while a construction bay and a clipper ship in the middle distance complete a story of American mercantile and maritime success.

MFA 2 Housing: Rehoused according to the procedure developed in 1995 by the MFA Paper Conservation Lab and carried out by Katrina Newbury. Plate received bare in Scovill wooden box.

  • Head of an athlete

    Roman
    Imperial Period
    probably A.D. 50–75

    Description

This head of a youth represents an athlete: around his head he wears both a cord (perhaps to hold his hair) and a ribbon, presented by an admirer. He may have been a boxer, as his ears appear swollen.
Classicistic creation inspired by Greek sculpture of about 460 B.C. Head of an athlete. Has cavities for inserted eyes. Hair treated with fine lines, tied into small knot on top of forehead. His headband is doubled; a cord holds his hair in place, and above is a ribbon awarded for athletic prowess. His puffy ears mark him as a boxer. Missing: nose and inserted eyes. The eyes were originally inlaid in another material
