Kurland is well known for her photographs of utopian landscapes and people who live on the fringes of mainstream America. Along with her young son Casper, she has taken to living and working on the road and made a series of photographs featured in her recent book, Highway Kind (Aperture 2016), that challenge the ideals of the American dream, and explore the place of the car in our culture, as well as her role as both artist and mother.
