Contemporary Chinese art and culture are informed and challenged by the nation’s ancient past. This interdisciplinary eight-session course explores China’s culture from Bronze Age jades to the contemporary film industry. Along the way, learn about the practice of calligraphy, modern and contemporary ink painting, and traditional and contemporary cuisine.

Session 1: Viewing Flowers from a Galloping Horse: Major Themes in Chinese History
Survey issues considered crucial for understanding China’s long, conflicted, and well-documented past, emphasizing both spoken and written language. Topics include the state and society, philosophy and religion, agriculture and commerce, as well as culture.
