40-Love (Terre battue) by Stéphane Demoustier (2014, 95 min.). Determined to be his own boss, Jérôme (Olivier Gourmet) attempts to start his own company, ignoring the reluctance of his wife Laura (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi). Ugo, their 11-year-old son, is a tennis player and a promising champion. Just like his dad, he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it. Together, Ugo and Jérôme realize that not all rules can be bent in the quest for success. Demoustier’s complexly layered film examines the pressures and power struggles inherent in family life. “What begins as a portrait of a newly unemployed French dad takes unexpected turns as the story emerges…revealing new psychological layers nearly every quarter-hour. It’s…a remarkable [debut],” Variety.  In French with English subtitles.
