Almayer’s Folly (La folie Almayer) by Chantal Akerman (Belgium/France, 2011, 127 min.). Deep in the Southeast Asian jungle,a Dutch fortune seeker is at odds with his Malaysian wife over the future of their daughter. Chantal Akerman’s long takes and slow tracking shots seep this story of colonialism’s failures in an atmosphere of tropical languor. Based on Joseph Conrad’s novel, Alymayer’s Folly is “one of the year’s most hypnotic and fascinating films” (Village Voice).
