Bestiaire by Denis Côté (Quebec, 2012, 72 min.). Filmed at a Quebec zoo, Bestiaire blurs the line between the observer and the observed. While absent of traditional narrative, there is breathtaking dramatic tension in every exquisitely framed shot: the sight of a lion attacking the doors of its cage or the scurrying striped legs of zebras in a holding pen. “For the most part, it shows exactly what it shows, so that when even the simplest cinematic mediation insinuates itself, it feels a bit like poetry—or conceptual magic” (NPR).
