The Ceremony by Eliran Knoller and Avi Weissblei (Israel, 2013, 85 min.). Documentaries can take startling turns, as in this character study of an 80-year-old Israeli colonel preparing to command the national ceremony on Israel’s Independence Day. While most youngsters in the army are turned off by the colonel’s unbending militarism, he finds an ally in an enthusiastic young woman. But disaster strikes the young woman, and the sorrowful events reveal a side to the unsentimental colonel one could never imagine. In Hebrew with English subtitles.
