Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Victor Fleming (1941, 113 min.). Spencer Tracy plays the title roles in Victor Fleming’s version of the horror classic. Dr. Jekyll downs an experimental elixir that transforms him into a monstrous alter ego, Mr. Hyde, but the experiment goes horribly wrong when Jekyll is able to transform without the help of the powerful serum. Ingrid Bergman was originally cast in the role of Jekyll’s fiancée Beatrix, but wanted to play against type in the more challenging role of Ivy, the barmaid tortured by Hyde. The role of Beatrix went to Lana Turner.
