Epidemic (1987, 106 min.). The film’s screenwriters, von Trier and Niels Vørsel, play themselves as writers coming up with a last-minute script for a producer. This story is intercut with scenes from the film they write, in which von Trier portrays a renegade doctor trying to cure a modern-day epidemic. “Among his . . . most revealing movies—giving full vent to his obsessions with cinematic purity, behavioral acting . . . most spectacularly, the notion of cinema as hypnosis” (The Village Voice). In Danish with English subtitles.
