Eyes of a Thief by Najwa Najjar (2014, 102 min.). Inspired by a true event, Najwa Najjar’s West Bank-set thriller Eyes of a Thief opens at the height of the second Intifada, in 2002. Wounded and on the run, the enigmatic Tareq (Egyptian superstar Khaled Abol Naga) initially eludes Israeli forces when nuns shelter him in a church crypt. Later captured and imprisoned for a decade, he returns to a world dramatically transformed and sets out to find Nur (Algerian singer-songwriter Souad Massi), the daughter he has never known. It is a search that pitches Tareq into a realm of dangerous secrets and moral uncertainties. The much-anticipated follow-up to Najjar’s award-winning Pomegranates and Myrrh (2008), Eyes of a Thief weaves its tale of love and loss into a taut political thriller aimed at the suspicions and sacrifices lurking beneath the surface of contemporary Palestinian society. Palestine’s Official Submission to the Best Foreign Language Film Award for the 2015 Academy Awards. In Arabic with English subtitles. Discussion with director follows screening.
