Fatima by Philippe Faucon (France/Canada, 2015, 79 min.). In French and Arabic with English subtitles.
Winner of three 2016 César awards – Best Film, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay – Fatima is the tale of a Moroccan-born single mother who faces prejudice and cultural upheaval in France, where she works as a maid to support herself and her two daughters. The film is based on the book Prayer to the Moon, a collection of poems and short prose pieces by Fatima Elayoubi, published in Arabic in France.
“Unusually nuanced and unsentimental … a film that brings clarity and even a sense of exhilaration to the struggle of mothers and daughters to succeed on their own terms and for one another.” – Sight and Sound
