Fear and Desire by Stanley Kubrick (1953, 60 min.). Long disowned by Kubrick, the film fell out of circulation for decades and has been seen by very few. In a new restoration from the Library of Congress, Kubrick’s first feature deals with his favorite theme: the inhumanity of war. More direct in its message than Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, and Full Metal Jacket, the film follows four soldiers making their way through a forest behind enemy lines after a plane crash. Fresh from his days at LOOK magazine, Kubrick already demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow.
