On Fertile Lands (Bereketli Topraklar Üzerinde) by Erden Kıral (Turkey, 1979, 115 min.). Three friends struggling to survive in the fertile plains of southeast Turkey travel to Çukurova to find work in hopes of a better life, but they encounter roadblocks at every turn. Banned by the military government after the 1980 coup for its critical view of the common people of the region, all existing prints of the film were confiscated. Years later, the negative was recovered and a digitally re-mastered copy of the film premiered to a packed house at the 2008 Istanbul Film Festival. Discussion with director follows screening. In Turkish with English subtitles.
