Fire at Sea (Fuocoammare) by Gianfranco Rosi (Italy, 2016, 108 min.). Documentary. DCP.
This striking documentary was shot on the Italian island of Lampedusa, a frontline in the European migrant crisis. The film centers on two Lampedusa natives: a 12-year-old boy and a doctor who treats migrants on their arrival. In addition to being Italy’s submission for Best Foreign Film in next year’s Oscar race, the film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. Meryl Streep, chair of the Berlin jury, called the film “a daring hybrid of captured footage and deliberate storytelling that allows us to consider what documentary can do. It is urgent, imaginative, and necessary filmmaking.”
