Fish & Cat (Mahi va gorbeh) by Shahram Mokri (Iran, 2013, 134 min., DCP). A group of students decides to camp in a desolate Caspian region to take part in a kite-flying competition during the winter solstice. Not far from the camp live Babak and Saeed, two grim cooks who roam the forest armed with sharp knives, in search of meat to serve at their decrepit restaurant nearby. Inspired by the true story of a restaurant that served human flesh, and shot in a single take, this tour de force combines formal experimentation with suspense to create a horror film with a sense of humor rare in Iranian cinema. In Farsi with English subtitles.
