Gangs of Wasseypur by Anurag Kashyap (India, 2012, 315 min). Filmmaker Anurag Kashyup remains one of the most exciting voices in independent Indian cinema. Drawing inspiration from Hollywood gangster films, Kashyup has created a complex tale of vengeance between two warring families in Wasseypur, India, that spans three generations. Impersonating the much-feared Quershi bandits, Shahid Khan is caught and forced to labor in the coalmines. Shahid’s son, the philandering Sardar, vows to restore his father’s honor and becomes the most feared man in Wasseypur. It is Fazal, Shahid’s grandson, who stirs up his family’s long-simmering feud with the Quershi clan. There will be a 15-minute intermission at the end of Part 1. In Hindi with English subtitles.

Co-presented by The South Asian Arts Council.
