The Idiots (Idioterne) (1998, 117 min.). In true von Trier fashion, The Idiots doesn’t shy away from an offensive premise: a film about middle-class intellectuals pretending to be mentally disabled. Without explanation for their motivations, the friends take their “spazzing” from personal to public spaces, and von Trier confronts his audience with a critique of contemporary culture. In Danish with English subtitles.
