Lolita by Stanley Kubrick (1962, 152 min.). “How did they make a movie out of Lolita?” teased the film’s original print ads. Due to strict censorship, Kubrick couldn’t quite convey the sexual relationship between Humbert Humbert (James Mason) and the teenage Lolita (Sue Lyon) as directly as author Vladimir Nabokov could, but he manages to skirt around the Hollywood Production Code through visual cues and double entendre. Peter Sellers shines as chameleon-playwright Clare Quilty in this fabulous black comedy.
