Melancholia (2011, 136 minutes). Melancholia—a large, blue planet—is poised for a collision with Earth. Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) nervously monitors the planet’s trajectory, convinced the end of the world is near, despite reassurance from her husband that everything is fine. Claire’s sister, Justine (Kirsten Dunst), views this apocalyptic ending as a relief from the evils of the world. Accompanied by Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Melancholia pointedly examines how the human psyche processes disaster.
