The Naked City by Jules Dassin (1948, 95 min.). The film opens with a sweeping aerial tracking shot over Manhattan, and as day turns to night, the narrator tells us this is “a story of the city itself.” Police detectives attempt to track down a killer, but finding him in a city of eight million people proves challenging. Using more than 100 city locations, The Naked City borrows from the noir and documentary traditions, creating a riveting portrait of a city that feels the weight of WWII and the Cold War on its shoulders.
