Only Yesterday by Isao Takahata (1991, 119 min.). Alternating between the present and the past, twentysomething Taeko wonders if she has been true to the dreams of her childhood self. A double period piece that evokes both the 1960s and ‘80s, Only Yesterday is quintessential Japanese nostalgic drama.
