Ornette: Made in America by Shirley Clarke (1985, 77 min.). Shirley Clarke returns to the jazz scene, making this brilliant music documentary featuring the legendary Ornette Coleman. The film serves almost as much as a portrait of Fort Worth, Texas—Coleman’s birthplace—to which he returns for a performance in front of well-heeled society members, a sharp contrast to the rundown neighborhood where Coleman was born. The film’s commentary includes a variety of people ranging from William S. Burroughs Jr. and Buckminster Fuller, to Robert Palmer and Coleman’s son Denardo.
