Outside Satan (Hors Satan) by Bruno Dumont (2011, 110 min). With his trademark long shots that highlight the vastness and beauty of the French landscape, Dumont’s latest film traces the mysterious healing ability of a man, an outsider who arrives in the village and befriends a traumatized woman. Like Dumont’s previous works, everything is left unsaid: no back-story is provided, and there are no psychological explanations for the characters’ actions, even though they are uncanny. In this engrossing, minimalist work, the film remains enigmatic until the end. Jeff Kline, Professor of French at Boston University, introduces the July 22 screening.
