The Prize (El Premio) by Paula Markovitch (Argentina, 2011, 99 min.). Under military dictatorship, a young mother and her daughter flee Buenos Aires to a small cottage on a deserted beach. Cecilia joins a nearby school, but her naïveté to the consequences of her mother’s political beliefs threaten their security. Markovitch’s ominous, observational camera brilliantly portrays their isolation, and the occasional uneven camera movements hint at the danger to come in this superbly acted and engrossingly atmospheric drama about innocence in illicit times.
