Rock the Casbah by Yariv Horowitz (Israel, 2012, 93 min.). This fast-paced and tense debut film, which won the Berlin International Film Festival’s Art Cinema Award, follows four young solders tasked with “maintaining order” atop a powder keg when they are stationed on the roof of a Palestinian family home during the first Intifada in 1989. Inspired by his experiences as a military photographer in the West Bank in the late 1980s, Horowitz’s film speaks to the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the humanity of those caught on either side. In Hebrew with English subtitles.
