A Separation by Asghar Farhadi (Iran 2012, 123 min.). This compelling drama set in contemporary Iran tells the story of a dissolving marriage. Simin wants to leave Iran with her husband Nader and daughter Termeh, but sues for divorce when Nader refuses to leave behind his father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Nader hires a young woman to assist with his father, hoping that his life can return to a normal state, but soon discovers that the new maid is lying to him—and realizes there is more on the line than just his marriage.
