Smooth Talk by Joyce Chopra (USA, 1985, 96 min.). BluRay.
Based on a short story by Joyce Carol Oats, this strange and layered little film looks at teenage sexuality from a female perspective. Eighteen-year-old Laura Dern performs her first lead role as Connie, a self-absorbed teen whose burgeoning sexuality causes tension with her mother. Connie and her friends spend their days at the mall and the drive-in, dressed in high ’80s style and flirting with boys. When Connie attracts the attention of a predatory older man, she finds herself caught up in a very adult situation. Director Joyce Chopra empowered Dern to contribute her own ideas to the film, including a scene where she practices flirting in front of a mirror. This was Dern’s first lead role.
