Directed by Stanley Kubrick (USA, 1960, 196 min.). 35mm.

Kubrick was recruited to direct Spartacus when the original director, Anthony Mann, was removed from the project after one week of shooting. In Kubrick’s hands, this mainstream production became infused with his own aesthetic, resulting in a blend of opulent imagery and classical Hollywood drama. Kirk Douglas plays the titular hero, a gladiator who leads a violent revolt against the decadent Roman Republic. Also starring Tony Curtis and Laurence Olivier.
