Spartacus by Stanley Kubrick (1960, 196 min.). Kubrick’s ancient Roman saga is epic in scope, scale, and ambition. Kirk Douglas stars in the title role as an ex-slave and gladiator leading a vagabond army against the all-mighty empire. Featuring an Oscar-winning performance by Peter Ustinov as the cowardly owner of a gladiator school, the film also stars Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, and Tony Curtis. “Fifty years later, the verdict is in: as cinematic landmark and popular entertainment,Spartacus still delivers” (LIFE magazine).
