Suitcase of Love and Shame by Jane Gillooly (US, 2013, 70 min.). In the 1960s, Midwesterners Tom and Jeanie corresponded with each other and recorded their affair on reel-to-reel audiotapes, amassing sixty hours of confessions. These testaments to desire were forgotten and decades later auctioned off on eBay. From the tapes, filmmaker and SMFA professor Jane Gillooly constructs a narrative arc of mediated romance. Her film invites us to listen in on a relationship with the critical distance and to contemplate how our own confessions—so willingly offered up in emails and on social media—might read fifty years from now. Discussion with director follows screening.
