Summer Hours (L’Heure d’ete) by Olivier Assayas (France, 2009, 102 min.). Superbly acted by some of France’s finest performers (Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling, and Jérémie Rénier), the divergent paths of three siblings collide when their mother suddenly dies. Now alone with each other, Adrienne (Binoche), Frédéric (Berling), and Jérémie (Rénier), confront the end of their childhood, reflect on family memories, and discover a unique vision of the future. Incisively written, Assayas’s film moves effortlessly through its narrative with all the grace of Jean Renoir at the height of his powers. In French and English with English subtitles.
