Taboo by Nagisa Oshima (Japan/France/UK, 1999, 100 min.). Japan’s rigid samurai code is threatened by the emotional whirlwinds of passion and desire. Set in 1865, Taboo centers on a samurai militia unit that fiercely defends the Shogunate. Desperate for new recruits, the unit enlists Kano, a fearless warrior whose mesmerizing good looks stir up jealousy and competition within the militia. Disorder erupts after a series of mysterious murders, where the visually tantalizing sword fights become eroticized rituals devoted to the forces of sex and death, exploding into a final image of exquisite beauty and fury.
