Three Colors: Blue (Trois couleurs: Bleu) by Krzysztof Kieslowski (France, 1993, 98 min.). The first of Kieslowski’s “three colors” trilogy, Julie (Binoche) deals with the deaths of her husband, a famed composer, and their only child. Gorgeous blue lighting fills the screen in many scenes, and beautiful musical compositions help pull the emotions out of Julie and the audience. “Blue is a film that engages the mind, challenges the senses, implores a resolution, and tells, with aesthetic grace and formal elegance, a good story” (The Austin Chronicle). Binoche won the 1993 César Award for Best Actress. In French with English subtitles.
