The Well-Digger’s Daughter (La fille du puisatier) by Daniel Auteuil (2012, 110 min.). In this lovely film that expertly blends romance, comedy, and drama, a father (Auteuil) is torn between his honor and love for his oldest daughter Patricia when she falls for Jacques, the wealthy son of a shopkeeper. After Jacques goes to war, she learns she’s pregnant with his child. Facing estrangement from her father and rejection from Jacques’s family, will Patricia agree to marry her father’s friend and fellow well-digger Felipe? “A finely acted tale of love and class in the south of France” (The Hollywood Reporter).
