In September, the Museum opened a new gallery devoted to the arts of the ancient kingdom of Benin in Nigeria, which are among the most spectacular and famous from the African continent. In her first gallery talk about these works, Teel Senior Curator of African and Oceanic Art Christraud Geary will discuss the meaning and context of exquisite objects in bronze and ivory created from the 15th through the 17th century by artists who worked exclusively for the kings of Benin.
